Did you know that there is an additional Veteran’s Benefit available called the Veteran’s Aid and Attendance Benefit? This benefit is to help with long-term care costs such as at home health care, assisted living or nursing home. This is SEPARATE from the traditional Veterans benefits. Right now, there are millions of dollars UNCLAIMED due to the lack of awareness of this benefit.

This benefit came out of the Pension Protection Act of 2008. This benefit states that if you were in the military for 90 DAYS, and ONE day of that 90 days, was during an ACTIVE WAR, then you qualify for this benefit. THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU HAD TO PART OF COMBAT.

In 2020, you could qualify for up to 422,938 per year or $1911.50/month.

What if your spouse passed away and you need help with elder care costs? Don’t worry, you can get up to half of that amount, assuming you did not remarry after your spouse passed.

Of course, there is an asset limit for those eligible, as it is geared towards helping lower income veterans. You cannot have more than $123,600 in assets, not counting your primary residence. There is a 3-year look -ack period, much like qualifying for Medicaid assistance.

Blue Water Bill Benefits Aka Agent Orange Benefits

In 2019, then-President Trump passed the Blue Water Bill which extended benefits to Vietnam Veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange (and other herbicides) during the war. If you are a veteran that served in the Vietnam War and were previously declined benefits due to not physically being in Vietnam, you could now qualify.

YOU CAN NOW QUALIFY IF:

  • If you were within 12 nautical miles from the shore of Vietnam or
  • Completed service in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ)
  • And presumed to have been exposed to herbicides, such as Agent Orange

Benefits include a lump sum back payment, tax-free and non-reportable to the IRS, as well as a monthly benefit going forward.

Other benefits were included with the bill in regards to the VA Home Loan Program as well.
